Explorer is most campers first Redwood Adventure Camp experience, focusing on the fundamentals of outdoor living, friendship, teamwork, and adventure. Campers participate in a wide variety of activities including crafts, nature education, challenge course, swimming, archery, backpacking, and beginning outdoor living skills. One of the highlights of Explorer is an overnight backpacking trip upriver. Depending on age and experience, campers will spend one or two nights in the backcountry and hike approximately ½ to 3 miles upriver. Each group carries what they need, makes camp along the river, creates its own menu, and cooks meals together over camp stoves. For many campers, this is their first experience carrying a pack, cooking outdoors, and spending a night away from Central Camp—and it is an exciting opportunity to discover that they are capable of more than they imagined. Explorers learn by doing—building confidence, trying new challenges, and discovering what it means to care for one another and the world around them. Through hands-on experiences and shared adventures, campers begin to develop independence, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a deeper appreciation for the outdoors. Campers need to be willing to learn, participate, and give things a try.
ADVANCED

Advanced is designed for campers who are ready to move beyond the Central Camp experience and take on greater physical challenges and responsibility. Advanced includes a 3–4 night upriver backpacking trip. During the backpacking trip, campers spend several days living and working together in the backcountry. They carry their own gear, help plan and prepare meals, set up camp, and learn to work as a team while navigating the challenges of an extended trip away from Central Camp. The experience builds on the skills introduced in Explorer while asking campers to take greater ownership of their group and their experience. Advanced campers are routinely involved in planning and arranging meals, trip execution, and morning prayer. The program asks campers to solve problems together, contribute to the group, and become increasingly responsible for themselves and those around them. Advanced is excellent preparation for our two-week Adventure program. Campers should be comfortable with hiking, willing to work as part of a team, and ready for a more physically demanding experience with greater expectations for independence and responsibility. Applicants need to be in good health for the physically strenuous activities involved.

ADVENTURE

Adventure is a two-week program designed as the culmination of the Redwood Adventure Camp experience. It combines significant outdoor challenges with leadership development, teamwork, personal growth, and spiritual development. Campers put their outdoor living, navigation, and survival skills to the test through two extended backpacking experiences. The first is typically a 3–5 night trip through the southern end of the Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness, where groups travel through the backcountry and make their way back to Central Camp. The second is the culminating ocean hike, during which groups navigate from Central Camp to Rockport Beach, typically spending 1–2 nights in the backcountry along the way. These trips require campers to carry their own gear, work together to plan and prepare meals, navigate their route, and solve problems as a group. Between and throughout these experiences, campers build advanced camp crafts, outdoor living, navigation, and survival skills. A defining part of the Adventure experience is the 24-hour solo, an opportunity for campers to step away from the group, slow down, and reflect on their experiences. Each camper is provided with a journal, water, and a sleeping bag and is given an individual location just out of sight of the other campers but within hearing distance. Campers spend the time on their own, with an emphasis on reflection, self-awareness, and personal growth rather than completing a set of tasks. All Adventure campers are invited to participate in the solo, but participation is voluntary, and campers may choose to opt out. The experience is carefully structured so that campers have personal space while remaining close enough to others for safety and support. Adventure also places greater responsibility on campers as members of the community. Strong teamwork and dependability are essential, and campers take an active role in planning and leading morning prayer. Throughout the program, campers are challenged to reflect on who they are, how they respond to challenges, and how they contribute to the people around them. Adventure is for campers who are ready to commit to a longer, physically and personally challenging experience and who can be counted on to contribute to the group. Applicants should have demonstrated that they can hike well, work harmoniously with others, and handle the demands of an extended backcountry experience.
GRADUATE
Grade Requirement: 11th & 12th - Applicant should have at least one previous summer’s experience at Camp or Camp Director approval.
(Campers who are 16 by July 1 of the summer are permitted to participate in both the Graduate and CIT programs in the same summer – if so, financial aid will only be made available for one of these programs and campers must return home between sessions.)

Graduate is the final stage of the Redwood Adventure Camp experience—a one-week co-ed program designed to challenge campers physically while creating space for reflection, spiritual growth, and exploration of future leadership. Graduate takes place in the Lost Coast's King Range, following a challenging hiking route that begins in the coastal mountains and ends at Black Sands Beach. Along the way, campers encounter physical challenges and intentional activities designed to help them consider their own strengths, values, relationships, and possibilities for future leadership. Campers travel and camp in separate groups, coming together some of the evenings for campfire time, conversation, spiritual discussion, and shared challenges. This structure provides opportunities for meaningful social connections while maintaining the traditions and community that make Graduate unique. Graduate is not simply another backpacking trip—it is an opportunity to look back on the camper experience, recognize how you have grown, and begin thinking about how you might carry those experiences into the future. While we consider this program complementary to our CIT program and staffing, you do not have to be a CIT to participate in Graduate, nor do you have to complete Graduate to become a staff member.
