
Training
A week-long intensive training session to prepare our staff to be the best, most prepared staff to work with our campers. Several certifications are provided to our staff free of charge. These certifications can be taken with our staff to obtain future jobs outside of Camp.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/First Aid for Infant, Child, and Adult Certification is provided at no cost to our staff prior to the start of Camp (a $200+ value)

Sexual Abuse Prevention Training

Redwood Adventure Camp Staff Training which includes: basic archery & riflery, hiking & backpacking skills, interpersonal skill, working with kids, and much more

Many staff members receive CA Serve Safe Certification which permits them to work in kitchens

Important Dates for this season:

Minimum age for Counseling Staff is 18 years old by June 23rd 2026

Minimum age for NEW staff that have participated in Adventure or Graduate Programs is 17 years old by June 16th 2026

Minimum age for Relief/Maintenance Staff is 16 years old by June 16th 2026

Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR – June 12-14 in person (and prework to be completed asynchronous one to two weeks prior)

Staff will be considered under contract from June 16th 2026 (1pm -3pm arrival) – July 29th 2026 (5pm).
There will be a celebratory staff dinner the evening of the July 29th 2026 that we hope staff will stay for, and staff are welcome to spend one final night at Camp if desired.

Requirements

Staff members are over 18 at the start of the first camping session

Redwood Adventure Camp may choose to hire 17-year-old staff members if they have participated in either Redwood Adventure Camp’s CIT or Graduate programs the prior summer

CPR/First Aid certified or the ability to obtain certification prior to Camp (we offer a course – free of charge to our staff – pretty cool!)

Must complete ACA Voluntary Disclosure Statement

Must be fingerprinted for criminal background check and sex offender registry checks

General Information – this is information about the nuts and bolts of living at Camp, be sure to open, read and print/download for future reference.

Immunization Record/Health Exam This form should be completed by your physician and must be completed your first year on staff.
​
Fingerprinting – Request for Live Scan –must be completed the first year you work for Redwood Adventure Camp even if you were fingerprinted for another job. Fill out form and make 3 copies – take all 3 copies to your nearest Live Scan location. If you are in the Sonoma/Marin County area please contact Ameriprints (http://www.ameriprints.com/). One copy comes to us as soon as possible for your background check. Keep your receipt for reimbursement!

Mandated Reporter Training – If you did not complete this last summer, you will receive an email from the American Camp Association (ACA) with login information and directions.
​
i-9 Form – Filled out once when first hired, so only complete if you have not filled out an I9 Form before for Redwood Adventure Camp. Please bring your identification with you when you bring the form to Lifeguard Training or Staff Training. Your passport, if you have one, is the best! If you don’t have a passport, you will need two forms of ID. Suggested ID’s: Driver’s license or School ID with picture and Social Security Card or certified copy of your Birth Certificate. Check the last page of the I9 Form for more options.

W4 Form – For paid staff only, must fill out your first year of employment with the Camp and any year your information changes, this form tells us how much tax to withhold from your paycheck.
Counseling Staff
Counseling Staff are hired to fulfill the job description of a Group Counselor and/or one other Central Staff Position (Nature Leader, Craft Leader, Kitchen Assistant, Maintenance Assistant/Relief Counselor, Lifeguard/Maintenance Assistant/Relief Counselor or Horse Program Assistant). If staff members are hired for just one camper session, at the end of the training program, they will be assigned either as a Group Counselor or a Central Staff Counselor depending on need and individual skills. If staff members are hired for more than one camper session, they will normally fill the position of Group Counselor for one of those sessions and may fill the position of Group Counselor or one of the Central Staff positions for the other camper session, again, depending on need and individual skills.

Responsibilities
1. To identify and meet camper needs.​​

Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving.

Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.

Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during Camp.

Help each participant meet the goals established by the Camp for camper development.
2. Carry out Camp programs.

Guide groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of Camp activities.

Carry out established roles for supervising camper health.
-
Carry out established roles in enforcing Camp safety regulations.
-
Teach appropriate behavior around Camp including respect for the environment, behavior toward one another, and the following of Camp rules.

Teach and monitor proper use and care of Camp equipment.
-
Check equipment and make or request repairs.
-
Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.

Participate in staff meetings
3. Assist in maintaining and improving the current program.

Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
-
Assist in unpacking all materials and supplies at the beginning of the season.
-
Assist in maintenance work crews before, during and after each session as needed.
-
Assist in packing all materials and supplies at the end of the season.
-
Evaluate current seasons and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program for the following season.
4. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Abilities to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, apply appropriate behavior-management techniques, report inappropriate or questionable behavior to the proper authority, and maintain confidentiality where appropriate.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the Camp environment.

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.

Able to assist campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury)
